- Railfan's Weekend -

23 - 24 February 2008
Ww 644 Plate

Saturday, 23 February 2008, dawned drizzly, and it was to stay as such for the day, there were fine periods, but these were few and far between. The rain didn't dampen the spirits of the railfan's, about 60 people, some coming from as far as Christchurch, and Greymouth. At the photo stops the drizzle was more of a pain than anything, the dampness helped create steam effects not available in day light, also there was no worry about where the sun was going to be and where the dark side was to be either!

The event used 3 locomotives, these being Ww's 480 & 644, and a surprise addition of De 507 to the final mixed train of the day. The first train was the mixed headed by Ww 480 which departed from Glenbrook at a little after 9:00am, and proceeded promptly to Fernleigh, where she ran around the train; Ww 644 and freight train were already waiting on the new section of line beyond Fernleigh towards Waiuku. The two trains headed separately by the Ww's traversed the new section of line from Black Bridge, Waiuku to Glenbrook as separate trains, upon arriving at Glenbrook the two trains were combined, the ballast wagons Yc 871, Yb 591, Yb 62, Yb 197, Yb 590 and F 506 from Ww 644's train were removed and set down in a siding, while H 1569 and Lc's 44493 & 40493 were added to the mixed train hauled by Ww 480. Finally De 507 and steam crane 224 were added at Pukeoware, and photo runs held along the line between Fernleigh to Glenbrook.

In total there were 4 different train combinations run during the day, some being combinations:
1 - Ww 480, Lc 43504, 3 x Kp, Urc 13, Ur 2161, A 1222, Af 804.
2 - Ww 644, H 1569, Lc 44493, Lc 40493, Yc 871, Yb 591, Yb 62, Yb 197, Yb 590, F 506.
3 - Ww 644, Ww 480, Lc 43504, H 1569, Lc 44493, Lc 40493, 3 x Kp, Urc 13, Ur 2161, A 1222, Af 804.
4 - De 507, Crane 224 ,Ea 2691, added the De was separated from the two Ww's by Lc 43504.

Sunday, 24 February 2008, again the morning didn't look promising, but the sun shone during the day and Ww's 644 & 480 double heading the hourly trains from Glenbrook to Fernleigh and return looked impressive, participants in the railfan's day were given exclusive permission on to Glenbrook Vintage Railway property to photograph the train.

The passenger train consisted of:
A 1222, A 1161, A 1162, F 141, Vb 624, both F 141 & Vb 624 being altered to viewing carriages.

The Glenbrook Vintage Railway and to be commended for the fine job they have done on their equipment, and also the presentation of their volunteer staff, in stunning period uniforms. A special thanks to the GVR crew who crewed the mixed, freight & passenger trains during the weekend; and a big thank you to the organiser. Thanks for a damn great weekend.
